R&B RHYTHMS is here with Dylan St. John, how’s it going?
What’s going on, not much, just touched down in LA at the Kanga House. Staying here for a week or so to finish visuals for my single “Dreamboat,” and to finalize my upcoming album Crkd Halo.
Tell me a little bit about how you got your start in music and who are some of your musical influences.
I got my start in hip hop by working for my mentor Morocco. I would spend every day at his studio in the Bronx. In exchange, he taught me everything I know and let me start recording for free after all the sessions ended.
I’d say Kid Cudi is a huge influence for me musically, especially in the beginning of my career. I grew up listening to music with my older brother and sister which was a mix of Usher, 112, DMX & Biggy, so that explains why I venture into different genres the way I do sonically.
You have your new single entitled “Real One.” Tell me a little bit about the single and how it came together for you.
It came together very quickly actually, as soon as I caught the melody for the hook I realized the potential of the record and had it finished a few hours later.
Do you have any upcoming videos?
Yes! Three music videos on the way. “Dreamboat” which will be the lead single for the album, is currently being shot this week. Single drops the 29th. My second single, “Global,” is an animation video which is extremely next level green screen work. And the last one is a secret for now.
What are your current thoughts on the state of the music industry?
Its cool. Artists seem to be taking more control over their careers. I like that. Music is forever evolving and I think it’s up to us as the artists to keep it elevating and progressing.
